DIY Fabric Pomander/Kissing Ball Project

Paper Lantern 035

So, for the last few days I’ve been working on a project.  I got the inspiration when browsing around on Hostess with the Mostess, a great blog for anyone interested in parties and entertaining. As I’m supposed to lead a DIY class soon at the boutique, I thought I’d experiment.

I chose to use white twill fabric, paper lanterns and hot glue. I found a 3-pack of blue paper lanterns at Hobby Lobby for 50% off and white twill fabric for 25% off. I already had the hot glue, so the grand total was about $16. Although time consuming, this project was a lot of fun to make.

First, I had to trace a round object to get even circles, so I used a candle jar lid that measured about 3 inches in diameter. I didn’t do a very good job keeping track of how many circles I used, so my guess would be somewhere around 200. The pomander took about 13 square feet of twill fabric, or just over 1 square yard.

I also had to cut each circle by hand, so I would recommend getting a pair of good fabric scissors.  Mine are Fiskars that I got for $12 at Hobby Lobby.

After cutting out all my circles (which I did not do all at once), I placed a dot of hot glue in the middle of each circle and pressed around the hot glue to make flower designs.  After letting the glue harden, I glued each flower onto the paper lantern, starting around the top of the lantern.

Once I had all the flowers glued on, I looked for any big open places around the globe.  I found several! – but I have been using dabs of hot glue to seal any holes.  So, here is my finished product.  Enjoy!
