Take a Road Trip

Cable Cove Campground & Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest

In fall 2010, Cole, Mollie and I took a weekend trip to the Nantahala National Forest.  We made camp at Cable Cove Campground, near Fontana Lake, NC.  The campground and sites were nice, and the single bathroom wasn’t too bad – just a few spiders in the corners.  The grounds were very well-maintained, and for the most part the area was quiet and peaceful.  Our site was on the creek between two  wooded lots.  Even though our neighbors were kind of close, they were nice and helpful and made our stay more enjoyable.

When we left the campground on Sunday, we took Mollie to Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, which was about forty minutes from our campsite.  Joyce Kilmer  is home to the only old-growth forest in the Eastern half of the country and is an easy two-mile, figure-eight loop.  The trail is great for animals on leashes and those seeking an easy hike.  If you don’t mind drinking refreshing well water and using non-flushing toilets in the company of a few spiders, this is the weekend trip for you.
